Background and purpose
Although a great deal of information about Chernobyl is available, on the internet and elsewhere, each source represents its own interests, which are not always immediately apparent. In addition, there is no website that provides a general, coherent and up-to-date overview of the subject. This situation has created uncertainty about many issues, both internationally and among the local population

Even more serious is the effect that this situation has had on aid programmes: many major organisations and key countries have been reluctant to act because they do not have reliable information about the situation on the ground. In certain cases it is unclear where genuine gaps in our knowledge exist and where information has simply not been processed or has not been made public.

Mission statement
The international website chernobyl.info is an information and communication platform. It is addressed to all those who are dedicated to the alleviation of suffering and to reconstruction efforts in the regions still affected by the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster. In pursuit of its objectives, the website takes the following approach:

  1. It provides impartial information on the impacts of the Chernobyl disaster, and on the current situation in the affected areas. It is under the supervision of the United Nations Development Programme.
  2. The website wishes to provide a sound basis for the evaluation of measures aimed at dealing with the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. The most important target audience worldwide comprises decision-makers, at all levels, who are concerned with the consequences of Chernobyl. The provision of information for decision-makers should help to promote the funding of targeted and useful measures.
  3. The website facilitates the sharing of experiences and communication between authorities, communities, NGOs, twin towns, international organisations, and local, national, multi- and bilateral support projects for the regions affected by the Chernobyl disaster.
