Window on Bragin

Bragin district is located in close vicinity to the place of the accident at the Chernobyl power plant. As a result of the accident over 2/3 of the district arable land became unsuitable for farm management. Nevertheless, people still live here. The district totals 136 settlements with about 18 thousand inhabitants. These people face the future full of hope and work to make their land prosperous. Sixteen secondary schools, two music schools, eight rural recreation centers, fifteen clubs, twenty six libraries and a picture gallery work for the welfare of the people.

News for this column is provided by Antonina Leonenko, History teacher of the Bragin School, and her assistants, schoolgirls of the 10th grade Victoria Dovzhenok and Olga Askerko. They are also helped by Inna Mikhalenko, computer science teacher of the Mikulichi School, and Radiy Khisamov, Physics teacher of the Bragin School. Themeeting dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant took place at the central square of Bragin. Local executives spoke to the audience and, as tradition demands, the meeting was followed by laying of flowers to the monument to Vassily Ignatenko, firefighter who was one of the first to stand in the breach and laid down his life combating the Chernobyl aftermath. meeting2.JPG

An athletic scratch race welcomed all comers as part of the actions dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident. Teams from all over the district and neighboring ones arrived in Bragin. Race winners received valued prizes and gifts. This action was supposed to demonstrate that life on contaminated territories goes on and progresses. cross.JPG

The Bragin hotel “Veras” is ready to accept guests. The living facilities were considerably improved after a repair. Several rooms of enhanced comfort are now available. A cozy bar is on the ground floor. Personnel of the hotel welcome everyone willing to sojourn.  hotel.JPG

The Bragin restaurant “Beryozka” invites for tasty meals and good time. Belarus’ national cuisine is most popular here. The local prices, which are the lowest in the district, are worth noting. Besides the main hall, the restaurant offers two banqueting ones. restauran.JPG

The new educational building of the Bragin School has been erected after 6 months of construction. The following stage includes internal and external finishing works. The building is supposed to be commissioned by September 1, 2006. Almost a hundred of little inhabitants of Bragin and neighboring villages will sit down at school desks in new rooms. The extended premises will make it possible to hold one-shift classes and render school hobby groups more efficient to involve children in the off hours. school.JPG

Students and teachers of the Bragin School took an active part in the country-wide subbotnik, the traditional weekend labor action. A competition of projects on best design of improvised flowerbed was held among the school classes. The best projects were realized and the school yard became even more lovely and good-looking. The reconstruction of the sports stadium of Bragin is a part of the program aimed at the Chernobyl disaster consequences relief. The football field coating was completely replaced earlier. Now the bleachers, racetracks and the territory adjacent to the stadium are being redeveloped. Bragin dwellers are delighted, as decent sports facilities will make it possible not only to preserve and strengthen health of the people, but also to accomplish athletic feats at various tournaments. stadion.JPG

Bragin district museum of local lore and picture gallery make preparations for the opening on the threshold of the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident. Final arrangements are to be completed soon. Visitors will be offered exhibits in the hall of the Chernobyl tragedy, as well as showpieces of World War 2 period and items illustrating contemporary peaceful life of the Bragin district. Museum guides will be delighted to tell about each showpiece in details.

The Bragin district education department hosted a seminar with the participation of Jean-Claude Autret, former president of ACRO (l’Association pour le Contrôle de la Radioactivité dans l’Ouest). Attendees addressed issues coming out of the project on radiological environmental monitoring at several district schools and presumable ways to surmount obstacles encountered in the course of the project implementation. They also discussed the prospects for cooperation within the framework of the project on deployment of foodstuffs contamination monitoring station at the Bragin secondary school and children’s art center.

The village of Mikulichi is located in the Bragin district. As of 1986 its population totaled 602 people. After the Chernobyl accident 388 local residents were resettled. Twenty years after the Chernobyl the village comes to life again. The countryside revival program aimed at improvement of the living conditions makes notable contribution in the process. Construction of comfortable houses is one this program’s priorities. Young professionals have been already accommodated in three new houses. Two families are waiting for final completion.

The Bragin territorial medical association has an ambulance department, which totals 32 paramedics. Three emergency teams, which include dispatchers, drivers and medical assistants, provide twenty-four-hour medical aid to the district population. They are always ready to come to relief at a pinch not only in the line of duty. Vyacheslav Lukyanenko, chief medical assistant supervises the department. The administration of the medical association appreciates the well coordinated work of this group, which has responded to 2,007 emergency calls over the past three months. Emergency_1_1.JPG

A concert of the Japanese theater “ANJUSHAKA” was staged on March 28 at the Bragin cultural centre as part of the program dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. Bragin inhabitants found out more about some elements of the Japanese culture and gave warm encouragement to the art masters during their on-stage performance. At the end of the concert all little spectators received souvenirs from actors and dancers of the troupe headed by art director “Mama Rosa”.  theater1.JPG

On March 24 the Bragin school hosted an exhibition of Belarus’ folk embroidery. Visitors could familiarize themselves with unique features of the exhibited works, as each lappet carries information about the place where the stamped linens come from, culture and customs of people living there. Besides, the exhibition was supposed to encourage attention of the public, particularly the younger generation, to national traditions of Belarus’ people and preserve the cultural heritage of the region.

Thanks  to the project “Information and communication technologies for development in the Bragin district”, the Mikulichi School could take an opportunity to organize the hobby group “Young journalist”. Children write articles and process photos using computers, thus expressing their apprehension of the events they take part in or witness. Their works may be seen in the regional newspaper “Mayak Palessya”.
