Mattsee basic school – “Aid across borders”

Idea, aims, resources:Active contacts between the cities of Mattsee and Minsk have been maintained since 1991 due to Headmaster Mr. Hakl, who established them in December 1990. Major events:
- trips of Mattsee young people to Belarus (1991, 1993, 1996, 1997, 2001);
- aid to the Children’s Onco-Hematological Center in Borovlyany and children affected by various diseases in the form of monetary donations, medicines, clothes, toys, books and foodstuffs. The total cost of the humanitarian aid stands at €100,000;
- organization of commemorative actions timed to the 5th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster; a humanitarian aid convoy (1991);
- philharmonic concerts in Minsk; a humanitarian aid convoy (1993);
- organization of commemorative actions timed to the 10th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster; a humanitarian aid convoy (1996);
- opening of the Children’s Onco-Hematological Center with the participation of Federal Minister Mr. Bertenstein (1997);
- organization of commemorative actions timed to the 15th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster; a humanitarian aid convoy (2001).

The total cost of the trips stands at €300,000. Objectives: seeing the new country, meeting with oncological diseases affected children. Humanitarian goal: support to the Children’s Onco-Hematological Center, promotion to the better understanding of other people and culture, which is of prime importance in conditions of European countries’ rapprochement; establishment of new relations and promotion to the affiliation beyond the native land; organization of a solemn action in memory of one of the greatest disasters in the world history. << back
