20.04.2007. Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant not to be Taken out of Operation until 2010

Ukraine’s concerned officials paid a visit to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant on the eve of the anniversary of the tragedy. They hold the opinion that the decommission procedure is behind the schedule.

Vice-speaker of the parliament Nikolai Tomenko, the deputy minister for emergency situations, heads of involved committees and regional administrations held an international meeting on observance of the legislation on the Chernobyl accident management and social protection of accident victims.

Processing plants and spent fuel storage facilities are needed to make the nuclear plant safe. Projects of foreign companies are currently suspended.

The officials specified the year 2010 as the new date of commissioning of the facilities and beginning of teardown of the 4th nuclear unit.
